Giuseppe worked with my pathetic attempts at telepathy the next evening. He picked up on my âI donât want to do thisâ vibe and promised to make it as quick and painless as possible. I mostly just sat in a chair hooked up to various instruments, entertaining myself by looking around the ânewâ section of the lab. He was right: it definitely didnât fit in with the medieval alchemical section. The secret bookshelf-door was pure necessity.
The telepathy came easily after a few tries, but that didnât make me comfortable with it. I was used to the peripheral stuff, it was there every night whether I liked it or not. The big stuffâtalking between brains, that weird closeness thingâgot packed up in its little box again and put away in the dark.
And then came the part with the giant fucking needle shoved into my leg. I tried to be a big boy about it, seeing as I inflicted worse bodily harm on others on a regular basis, but Iâll be honest, I squealed like a baby. Thankfully, I healed fast enough to forget it ever happened within a half hour.
I went out with them later in the evening, then went upstairs to my room to stand by the window for awhile. Manhattan had become familiar thanks to our nighttime jaunts, though I could hardly ever give you my precise location on a map. The city was alive and pulsing, but welcoming. Everyone always says itâs a mean city, but Iâve never seen itâand itâs hard to get less New York than my upbringing. Anyone and everything could be found somewhere, and that was reassuring.
I liked to hang out and watch our relatively quiet neighborhood crawl by more than anything. Part of me felt separate from it, but that didnât come with isolation and depression anymore. It was nice to look back and see how far Iâd come, really. Kind of a relief and kind of a reminder.
I wasnât so confident that I could take my newfound contentment with me next week, though. In an effort to keep as much of it as possible, Iâd asked Gianni to come for Christmas. Heâd smiled and looked satisfied, then said of course he would come if I wanted.
While I was grinning at the memory of that smug face, I heard his knock and the quiet creak of the door swinging open. I felt him come in and close the door behind him. He ambled into position across the window ledge from me, arms crossed over his chest, eying me up and down. Looking satisfied again, likely with himself.
And why not?
He said, âYou look so happy. I hardly recognize you.â
I looked him over, just like he had done. He still had on his shirt, but untucked and half-buttoned, as if heâd considered undressing for bed, but taken a detour to come say good morning first.
I liked him a little bit rumpled. Another thing few people got to see.
How the fuck could I be unhappy?
âHave you been drinking?â he asked, the smile becoming a smirk.
